CE at Xavier

Conductive Education “CE” is a holistic approach to treating motor dysfunction (movement disorders). The disciplines of Teaching, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy are integrated into a meaningful whole.

“CE” promotes self-belief, personality development, orthofunction and independence. “CE” is different from other treatment models as it teaches the child to be responsible for their own body, rather than being a passive recipient of therapy. “CE” is proactive learning and problem solving, with the belief in every child’s ability to learn. Group participation is a key ingredient as children learn best from each other. “CE” was developed at the Peto institute in Hungary; it is facilitated by a “Conductor” a specialist in Conductive Education.

Conductors at Xavier Since 1995 The Xavier Parents & Citizens Association have engaged the services of Judit Szathmary a Hungarian Conductor. Judit is the Founder, Director and Senior Conductor of Conductive Education Support Services United Kingdom. She has recently branched out and formed a CE Training Company and established a school in Kuwait based on Xavier. Judit works in class with all the children and provides information sessions for families and carers as well as providing professional development. Children are invited from outside Xavier to attend group sessions on a user pays basis, if you know of anyone who would benefit from these programs please let them know. Phone the school for information.

The Curriculum is in accordance with Education Queensland’s “Productive Pedagogies” which encompasses The Foundation Learning Areas (FLA’s) for children under five years The FLA’s are; Thinking, Communicating, Sense of Self and Others, Social Living and Learning, Health and Physical Understanding, Cultural Understanding, Understanding Environments. For school age children the Key Learning Areas (KLA’s) are implemented. The KLA’s are; English, Maths, Studies of Society and the Environment (SOSE), Science, The arts, Languages other than English (LOTE) and Technology. Conductive Education is the overarching pedagogy enmeshing the holistic education for our children.
Xavier as part of Whites Hill State College is an “IDEAS School”
Innovative Designs for Enhancing Achievements in Schools. The IDEAS vision is to inspire schools to engage in journeys of self-discovery, which will ensure they achieve sustainable excellence in teaching and learning.

Age Range
: Children can be enrolled when the need for early intervention has been identified. The youngest child to be enrolled at Xavier was only Eight Months.
Children under three years of age are entitled to 3 sessions per week (3 mornings) 4-5 years are entitled to 5 sessions (2.5days) and school age children (ie the year they turn 6) are entitled to attend school Five days per week.

Open Door Policy
: One of the most noticeable things about Xavier is the parental involvement. Parents/carers are welcome in class and to assist around the school, however programs are tightly structured leaving little time for interruptions so it is important to work in with the class teacher to plan the most beneficial time to assist. It is not appropriate to drop in to any classroom during school hours. Please make a time to meet with your child’s teacher if there is a matter that needs discussion.

Attendance:
Children enrolled in a school are expected to attend, if absences are not accounted for on the roll it is considered truancy. Children arriving more than 15 minutes late should be signed in so the attendance records are correct. When it is necessary for a child to leave school during school hours, parents/carers are expected to sign him/her out. In the event of an emergency it is vital to know where the children are.

Parents & Volunteer Sign In & Out Book
is located near the fish tank and must be signed each day. The P&C have an insurance policy covering parents and volunteers in the school if they have signed the book.

Punctuality:
Children are supervised from 8.30am School starts at 9.00am for school age children and 9.15am for pre-school age children. It is vital for children to be on time as it is challenging enough to keep the day flowing and maintain the children’s attention without interruptions.

Individual Education Program (IEP
) Parent’s and the child’s team formally set Individual goals twice a year at IEP meetings. These will take place at the end of first and third terms.

Parents Room
: Parent networking is one of our most important resources! The parent’s room is stocked by the P&C for parents and carers. Over the years many strong friendships have developed from a simple gesture or shared experience. We must always be sensitive to the emotions of others. Respect and courtesy is expected. It is each individual’s responsibility to clean up after themselves. If the parent’s room is left in a mess it is usually the teacher aides that clean it up, this is time better spent with the children. The parent’s room is the venue for P&C meetings thus enabling us to mix business and pleasure.

Levy
: $80 per year

Volunteering
: Commitment is the key word! As Xavier becomes a part of each volunteer they soon understand the necessity for professionalism. Xavier has a many volunteers including The Churchie Boys, The Lorretto Girls, St Laurences as well as many individual volunteers

Car Park: There is very limited parking available in the top car park and it is necessary for the school busses to have a clear path. Where possible please park in the street, making sure to obey traffic regulations.

Equipment Loan
: School Equipment may be available for loan. Each piece of equipment has an identification number and must be signed out at the front desk before borrowing and signed in when it has been returned. It is expected that all equipment will be looked after and any damage reported promptly.

The Cerebral Palsy League
: CPLQ therapists work at Xavier with the children, as part of the CPLQ’s funding is for supporting students in schools.

Assembly
: A wonderful opportunity for the whole school community to come together to celebrate the children’s achievements. Everyone is welcome to attend each Wednesday afternoon at 2.30.

Physical Education
: All children at Xavier participate in weekly Conductive Hydrotherapy, various other forms of PE as well as daily lying task series; sit to stand and the obstacle courses.

Medication
: Forms are to be updated each year and it is essential to keep information current. Please see Sr Chris about individual medication details.

Siblings Playgroup:
The P&C provide a siblings playgroup to enable parents to work in class knowing the other children are close at hand and having fun with qualified school staff.

Transport:
Children for whom Xavier is their nearest appropriately coded facility receive transport assistance, the majority of children enrolled at Xavier are “Parent Preferred Placements” and therefore do not receive transport assistance. Some families have successfully applied to different organizations and funding bodies for assistance in this area.

Uniforms: The Uniform shop is located on main campus Burn St entrance. Uniforms are compulsory for school age students. Uniforms are convenient and create a sense of belonging.
